Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia
Kim Soon-Eung
Abstract
Three cases of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in Korean infants have been reported. They occurred in two 2¢¥/2-month and a 3-month old girls in two separated orphanages. The diagnosis was made after an autopsy in two cases, and by an examination of the lung in one case. The chief pathological finding in¢¥ these three patients was an interstitial pneumonia that was characterized by eosinophilic honeycombed foamy-material in the alveoli, alveolar ducts and bronchioles and moderate to severe infiltration of mononuclear cells including many plasma cells. Cysts of Pneumocystis¢¥ carinii was demonstrated wit h the eosinophilic foamy material by Gridley¢¥s fungus stain in all cases. It is of interest that a cytomegalic inclusion body was found incidentally in one case. The three cases reported herein are rather, similar in many respects to the classical pneumocystis pneumonia, as describedin the European literature, than non-European. cases.
